How to Erase Part of an Image

Learn how to use the Eraser tool in SimpleSnip to remove pixels from a layer, masked to your selection.

1. Select the Eraser tool

   Click Eraser in the toolbar, or press E. It shares the same options bar as the Brush.

2. Set size and opacity

   Use the Size and Opacity sliders. A lower opacity partially fades pixels instead of fully clearing them.

3. Erase

   Click and drag over the pixels you want to remove. Erasing clears to transparency, not to white, so it works the same regardless of what's beneath it.

4. Stay inside a selection

   Erasing respects the active selection, so make one first with the Select tool if you only want to clear part of a layer.

5. Draw a straight edge

   Hold Shift and click to erase a straight line from your last point, same as the Brush. On touch, use the Line toggle.

💡 Tip: Erasing the locked Background layer isn't possible since it's solid or fully transparent already. Erase a pixel layer above it instead.
