How to Use the Brush Tool

Learn how to paint on a layer with SimpleSnip's Brush tool, including straight lines with Shift+click.

1. Select the Brush tool

   Click Brush in the toolbar, or press B.

2. Set your color

   Click the color swatch in the toolbar to pick a color, or Alt-click anywhere on the canvas to sample one.

3. Set size and opacity

   Use the Size and Opacity sliders in the bar above the canvas. A flat opacity applies once per stroke, so painting back over the same stroke doesn't build up extra darkness.

4. Paint

   Click and drag on the canvas. Painting is masked to the active selection, if you have one, and only works on a visible pixel layer.

5. Draw a straight line

   Hold Shift and click to connect a straight line from where you last left off. On a touch screen, turn on the Line toggle in the options bar instead.

💡 Tip: Painting on the locked Background layer isn't allowed. Add a new layer first if you want to paint on a blank canvas.
