How to Add Text to a Photo

Learn how to add text to a photo for free with SimpleSnip's Text tool.

1. Select the Text tool

   Click the text icon in the toolbar, or press T.

2. Set your font and style

   Pick a font family and size, and toggle Bold or Italic, from the bar above the canvas.

3. Click to place it

   Click anywhere on the canvas to drop a text box, then start typing. It shows live in the color and font you picked. On a touch screen, tap once to place the box and the on-screen keyboard opens.

4. Commit or cancel

   Press Enter (or tap Add text on a phone) to bake it onto its own new layer, named after what you typed. Press Esc (or tap Cancel) to back out without adding it.

5. Adjust it afterward

   Each text box is its own layer, so you can move it with the Move tool, restyle the color with Hue/Saturation, or delete it, all without touching the rest of the image.

💡 Tip: Change the color before you start typing using the color swatch in the toolbar, or Alt-click anywhere on the canvas to sample a color from your image.
